Christmas Fun In Michigan (yes you still have time)
T’is the season to be jolly, or so the song goes…shopping, baking, wrapping, parties, dinners, decorating all needs to be squeezed in along with the regular day to day activities. By the way when’s the last time you moved that elf? For what can be a beautiful and magical season it can sometimes become a big headache. Time for a break…date night or quality family time the following activities will have you believing in the magic of Christmas again. Bonus a lot of them continue for a few days or weeks beyond Christmas day.
Holiday Nights at Greenfield Village (Dearborn, MI)
Holiday Nights at Greenfield Village, is like stepping back in time, there are 7 historic districts to explore, model T rides, a wonderfully restored carousel to take a spin on, ice skating, shopping, and much much more. Costumed actors stroll the streets adding to the overall experience. Warming stations and heated interiors help keep you warm.
Dates still available December 20-23rd and December 26th-30th 2016. * please note this is an extremely popular event and tickets are very likely to sell out. Please check their website for up to date information.
Crossroads Village and Huckleberry Railroad (Flint, MI)
My husband and I just did Date night here, it’s a smaller village then Greenfield Village but it’s decorated very nicely and you get to take an hour train ride to see all the light displays. Many of the buildings are open and nicely decorated. It was such a relaxing visit that this blogger totally forgot to take any photo’s. Oopps bad blogger.
Dates still available December 20th-23rd and December 27th-30th.
Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland (Frankenmuth, MI)
This one is inside (yay). Yes it’s actually a store, where you can get everything Christmas, plenty of displays as well. Outside light displays too.
Dates Available- Open year round with the exception of holidays of course. Bonus you can visit the lovely German Village of Frankenmuth.
Wayne County Lightfest (Westland, MI)
Stay in the car for this one it’s a drive through Hines park to see all the light displays, stop for some hot chocolate or bring your own, blast those Christmas tunes and the heat.
Dates Available- Now through December 31st (closed Christmas day)
Toledo Zoo Lights Before Christmas (Toledo, OH)
Ok so it’s not technically in Michigan, however if you live in Southeast Michigan, it’s not really that far of a drive. The drive by the way is worth it, the Zoo pulls out all the stops and the light displays are beautiful, not to mention that you get to see a lot of the nocturnal animals in action. The night we went the Snow Leopard was out pacing around and growling/making all sorts of cool sounds. I thought it was worth just for that.
Dates Available- Now through December 31st (Closed Christmas Eve and Day)
I have personally been to all of the above locations and think they are all worth a visit, if not this year then mark them on the Calender for next year, they are all typically open right after Thanksgiving. The few events I am listing below I have not been too, but they sound fun!
Campus Martius Park (Detroit, MI)
Ice skating, carriage rides and live performers. Not to mention a huge Christmas tree
Dates Available- now through December 30th including Christmas eve
Christmas Michigan (in the UP)
You can get a stamp on your letter to Santa at the local post office, plus who wouldn’t want to visit a town called Christmas. (I don’t know much about this place other than the postmark)
Wild Lights at the Detroit Zoo (Royal Oak, MI)
Another opportunity to see fabulous light displays and the animals.
Dates Available- December 20th-23rd and December 26th-31st.
If your budget of time or money doesn’t allow for any of these activities you can always bundle up the kids and either walk or drive around your neighborhood to see all the local lights. Visit your local library for fun Christmas movies or books to enjoy as a family.
I am sure there are plenty more Christmas events going on, if you know of one that can’t be missed put it in the comments.
