*Blog Tour* The Duke of Defiance by Darcy Burke
Hey guys, I am participating in my first ever blog tour! Exciting stuff. Today I am Showcasing Darcy Burke’s The Duke of Defiance, which is the 5th book in The Untouchables series. I haven’t read the others yet, but as I thoroughly enjoyed the Duke of Defiance, I immediately downloaded the rest of them. Read on for a full review and author info.
Title: The Duke of Defiance
Series: The Untouchables
Author: Darcy Burke
Publish Date: June 27th, 2017
Genre: historical romance
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
From The back cover:
Difficult and defiant as a child, Bran Crowther, Earl of Knighton left England as a young man to pursue independence and adventure. He never expected to inherit the title and when duty calls him home, he still finds Society’s codes constricting and others’ expectations oppressive. Nevertheless, he needs a wife to be a mother to his young daughter, preferably a woman of intelligence and warmth who is, above all, immune to his idiosyncrasies—and to falling in love.
Widow Joanna Shaw isn’t interested in a second marriage, not after the loveless, passionless union she endured. She’d much rather dote on her young niece and nephew since they will likely be the only children in her life…until she meets a precocious girl, in desperate need of a mother. But her father, the so-called Duke of Defiance, is as peculiar as he is handsome, and Jo won’t take another risk with her heart. Their rules, however, are made to be broken, even when the consequences could destroy them both.
At last, we finely get a historical romance male character that is full of unusual quirks, sure he’s still a duke and handsome to boot, but his flaws make him that much more realistic. A refreshing change from the usual suspects. Enter, Bran a 3rd son, who suddenly finds a Dukedom thrust upon him. Reluctantly returned to England from Barbados, with his young daughter. Bran dislikes wearing all the clothes and paraphernalia that polite society requires, speaks what’s on his mind- no matter that it’s unconventional or downright rude.
Then we have Jo, a recent widow, who has endure 8 years of marriage to a man who went out of his way to mentally abuse and belittle her, causing her to believe that she was the reason he preferred men. Staying with her sister in London, she is seeking a new path, and thinking marriage is not for her. Harboring leftover resentment towards her sister, husband and father.
A few things didn’t set well with me. The child characters in particular the 2 young girls who were said to be about 5 years old, are portrayed more like they are 8. The reasons for Bran’s quirks are not really explored, as well as I would have liked. Lastly Jo carries all this resentment towards her sister, it’s mentioned several times, then there is a big scene and it all goes away, I just didn’t feel it was resolved very well.
Overall though it was a quick, fun read, with well developed characters. This book will leave you laughing, crying and everything in between. Witty banter, romance, and humor. It’s historical regency romance at it’s finest. Put this one on your summer reads list.
