The Fun of Subscription Boxes
I love getting mail!! Really who doesn’t? I’m not talking bills and junk, I’m talking post cards, letters and internet shopping orders. But really the best mail, in my opinion, are subscription boxes, it’s a bit like Christmas morning. Just in case your not exactly sure what a subscription box is– it is a themed or curated collection of items that are sent to you on a monthly basis. For example, if you subscribe to Owlcrate, a young adult book box, then you receive a book, and about 5-6 other bookish items that all match the theme of the month. The bookish items usually consist of bookmarks, bath bombs, tea, pens, socks, art prints, jewelry and the list goes on. Generally the new theme is announced, when the current month’s boxes are starting to ship, which gives you a general idea of what to expect but the actual items are usually kept secret, though sometimes you are given a sneak peek of one of the companies providing items. Towards the end of the month your box is shipped and arrives at your door.. you just open, squeal a little at all the fun stuff and then enjoy.
Quick Google search and a look at Pinterest, will show you just how popular these little boxes of delight are. because there is a box for everyone and everything.. they range from razors, makeup and other beauty items, time of the month boxes, underwear and socks, clothes, hats, and watches to things like snacks, food and toys. There are boxes for book lovers, craft lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, fitness nuts and more. These are not just for women either, they have boxes for men, children and your pets too. It’s rather amazing and ingenious, the things people come up with. Most subscription box companies operate in the same manner, which is to say that you can either sign up for a one time box, a monthly recurring subscription or you can purchase a bulk of months at once. Some of them even allow you to skip a month, if you don’t like the theme or for budget reasons.
Early on I tried a few of the makeup boxes, because at only $10 I thought they were a good way to try out the idea of subscription boxes. I ended up canceling them, not because I thought the value wasn’t there, but one I am not that into makeup or beauty products and two the samples were sometimes just kind of random or repeats. So use caution there, I generally found that you could the same samples for free at the Sephora counter.
For my son’s 16th birthday, he received a year of Loot Crate, which is a box based on video games and pop culture. This one he really liked and for the price which was $30 a month, you actually got a good deal. The box included a t-shirt and 5-6 items themed with geeky goodness. everything from Funko Pops, mugs, and collectibles. He was quite disappointed for it to come to an end.
Owlcrate is by far my favorite box, because duh it’s book related! Honestly though all the items have been really good quality and actually quite useful. The themes are well thought out and the company really takes an interest in their customers. They even have monthly photo challenges on Instagram and Facebook for you to win a free box. Besides the books, some of my favorite items that I have received are- candles, bath bomb, socks, key-chains and tea. You can sign up for owl crate here, and if your into books, then I highly recommend you do.
Another one I am currently using is Stitch Fix, a stylist picks out 5 pieces either of clothing, shoes or accessories, usually some of each, hey send them to you and then you have 3 days to decide if you want to keep them all, just 1 or 2 or none, they provide return shipping. You pay a stylist fee of $20 which is then applied to any items purchased, if you decide not to purchase then you lose the $20. So far I have loved the majority of what they sent, for me so have happily managed to keep at least one piece from each box. Also if you keep a Pinterst board for style you should include that in your profile, it helps out your stylist. It’s a great way to try out some new styles or fads. Try stitch fix here. You can see my first review of Stitch Fix here.
Last but not least, I also get a sock subscription box, yep I love socks! I get 3 pairs of socks each month from Woven Pear. I love them, usually get 2 pairs with cute sayings on the bottoms, like the ones pictured above. You don’t have to get subscription either, they sell them on an individual basis as well. You can get 10% off your first order here.
Your turn. Do you subscribe to any boxes?
